Beyond his current unemployment and that he doesn't seem to be working very hard to find a job, Lauren Frank, the assistant to the manager of Module 45, a shared work space, and urban planner Tom Anderson outwardly have the perfect "vanilla" relationship, now going on five years and at the stage of cohabitation. While Tom does have that view, Lauren, below the surface, is feeling uncertain about her life including with Tom. Two things shake up that life for Lauren. First, her parents, Carol and Matt Frank, announce, to Lauren out of the blue, that they are getting divorced, but will still live together, basically turning their relationship from one of life partners to platonic roommates. And second, she gets a new boss in the form of David Paolini, a one time fling before she met Tom. The only reason that there was not a future for her and David five years ago is because he was married at the time, and perhaps because of their age difference, he twenty years her senior. David makes it quite clear to her that he wants to continue on where they had left off five years ago. With these stressors in her life, Lauren overcompensates by trying to make her life with Tom even more vanilla perfect, which may only compound the emotional problem for her instead.

It's a refreshing and original take on the relationship between a father and his children, and this movie has a very strong protagonist (especially when you think about it). The acting by all the cast members is superb, and of course the performances by Diana Rigg, Tom Sizemore, and Jimmy Smits are totally believable. All of the characters are very believable and very real. I think the movie gives you a very realistic view on the relationship between fathers and their children, because it's not ideal and it can be very dangerous. It's a very intense movie, and I don't understand why it's being panned by critics. It's a very powerful, dark, and complex movie. I would definitely recommend it to everyone.

The filmmakers did a great job in creating this story. The characters are realistic and living in their times. That was an artistic and creative touch on the story. I think the film is realistic and not pretentious. It could be a movie for kids and teens but kids and teens wouldn't enjoy it. That is why this film gets good ratings and also because of the atmosphere and the execution of the story is well done. The story is well executed. You see several reasons why the character do the things they do. And the way it is presented makes you identify with the character, especially when you see the scene where he has to drink from the water fountain. Overall I think this movie is worth watching. I recommend it. I would not say it is a movie for everyone but I think for people who like realistic movies I think this would be a good choice.

.but as a whole, it's an enjoyable story about the value of friendship and the connection to the things you hold dear. I like to say, 'this movie is the best movie you'll ever see'. I give it a 9 because of its length, at the same time, it's perfect in the execution of its message. The actors were not really known or famous at the time of the film's release. Nevertheless, I feel this is a fine film and I wish it had more recognition. It's well worth seeing.
